We couldn’t have been prouder of Shrapnel in the Group 1 Coolmore Stud Stakes at Flemington last Saturday. The rain held off almost long enough for Shrapnel, with it belting down just 30 minutes before the race and continuing for the rest of the day. As we know, Shrapnel prefers to be on top of the ground and didn’t particularly appreciate the conditions.

It probably wasn’t one of Michael Rodd’s best rides, getting stuck in traffic for much of the race and only getting clear with 150m to run. Still quite green, Shrapnel fought Rodd on occasion when he attempted to push through a gap, which you just can’t afford to do at this level. Star Witness was the ultimate professional and this really was the difference.

Once clear, the Stallion Fund 2009 colt did manage to make good ground to the line and with a better run would have run second and perhaps given Star Witness a good scare. He has pulled up well and will go to the paddock now before returning for the early Autumn features. A great training effort by team Kavanagh during such a wet spring and we can rest assured we have a genuine Group 1 stallion
prospect on our hands in Shrapnel.
