Ron and Debbie Gilbert’s enthusiasm for breeding began with foundation mares including Bletchingly’s wonderful daughter Verocative – the dam of Jet Spur and stakes placed Critical List and Miss Brinkley.

But the Toowoomba-based couple quickly decided they wanted to be closer to their growing band of grand matrons, and the Darling Downs is renowned historically for producing champion racehorses.

Its spectacular plains, framed by the benevolent rise of dormant volcanoes, have dark chocolate-coloured soil brimming with trace minerals that help create strong, tough, sound thoroughbreds.

We wanted our horses closer, and we were delighted to find ample evidence that the Darling Downs was an ideal place for us to create our own nursery.”

Although the Gilbert’s have enjoyed the highs of racehorse ownership, they found the challenge of breeding racehorses capable of winning black type to be the ultimate challenge.
