GILBERT HONES IN ON QUALITY US MARES

The Courier Mail – 19th June 2014. By Peter Howard.

Gilbert’s latest US acquisition Quaintly has arrived at his Highgrove Stud near Toowoomba, bringing to six the number of high quality American mares on the farm.

Gilbert is considering mating her with Fastnet Rock in the new season.   Quaintly – by Giant’s Causeway from the family of Sadler’s Wells, Nureyev and Yeats – won twice in Ireland and one race in the US, and was placed at Group 3 and Listed level in the US.

Gilbert bought her in foal to Breeders’ Cup winner Speightstown at the Keeneland breeding stock sale last November for AUS$401,000. In March she foaled a colt, who stayed in Kentucky to be raised and prepared for the Keeneland yearling sales next year.

Gilbert has followed the same process with most of his US purchases, foaling them down before bringing the mare to Highgrove, while the foals stayed to be raised for American yearling sales.

In September, Gilbert will travel to Keeneland to sell a More Than Ready filly from his 2012 purchase, A Brilliant Idea (by Afleet Alex), a Listed winner at Monmouth Park. A Brilliant Idea will have her first Australian foal by Snitzel in September.

Highgrove’s other US mares are Tears I Cry (by Chester House), Helena’s Secret (by Five Star Day), Summer Laugh (by Distorted Humor) and Simply Spiteful (by Speightstown).
