GAI WATERHOUSE’S 2009 DARLING DOWNS STUD TOUR

Excerpt from Gai’s Diary (11/11/2009)

The stud tour is in the final stages. Last night we stayed at Ron and Debbie Gilberts’ Highgrove Stud and a foal was born, by Redoute’s Choice out of Angelic Smile (making him a 1/2 brother to the Group winner Fravashi). As only Ron is capable of, I had requested would there be any chance that Lea, Kate and I could have our nails done at the local beauty parlour at days’ end. Debbie organised for the beauty parlour to come to Highgrove and Nicki, the most capable of manicurists told me my skin was terribly dry and I would have to exfoliate. She didn’t stop at me – she moved onto Lea and Kate rubbing this substance into our hands then wrapping us in gladwrap so we looked like daleks. I felt like I was back on the Dr Who set. Then she filed and pared our cuticles and nails and we all felt downright gorgeous. Then in the midst of this, Colin, Highgrove’s stud manager, ran in to say a foal was being born. We all rushed into front paddock where the bonny colt popped out with assistance from Colin and Steve. For most of the party (15 of us) had not witnessed a birth before, so it was so exciting and a highlight of the trip. Back into their lovely cosy cottage as it was quite cold out in the paddock and the most sumptuous of dinners courtesy of the chef Mark. Oysters, crabs, prawns, fish, lamb off the farm, nothing was missed. We talked horses, and life in general and had a wonderful few hours. Early next morning we inspected the Highgrove draft and just like the evening before, they did not disappoint. Jumped on the back of a tractor and Colin took us to view the Easter and Melbourne babes. Ron will not be disappointed in any of the sales they attend as the horses are top draw.
